Air Out - AO

What does Air Out Mean?

A type of putout in which the batter hits a fly ball fair and a fielder is able to successfully field the ball before it hits the ground, automatically putting the batter out. Each time the batter is putout after hitting a fly ball, the batter and the pitcher on the play will receive an additional "air out" or "AO" on their stat lines.

Also referred to as "fly outs".

Sporting Charts explains Air Out

Power hitters often generate a lot of air outs due to the increased number of balls they launch into the outfield. The opposite of an air out is a ground out, which occurs when the batter hits a ground ball that is successfully fielded to put the batter out.
