Foul Out

What does Foul Out Mean?

This is a type of putout that occurs when the fielder is able to catch a ball while in flight, even though the ball would be deemed a foul ball if it were to touch the ground. The most common type of foul outs are from pop fly hits, which are hit extremely high but do not travel far and allow the fielder the time to get placed under the ball to make the catch.

Sporting Charts explains Foul Out

Even though the ball was going to be a foul ball and it is caught in foul territory, because the fielder caught the ball in flight the batter is automatically out. Most often, it is the catcher, first or third baseman, or the left or right outfielder who makes the foul out due to his or her proximity to the foul lines.
