What does Innings Pitched - IP Mean?

A pitching statistic in baseball that represents the aggregate amount of innings pitched by a pitcher where, an inning pitched is three outs, with each out counting for a third of an inning in the Innings Pitched count. This statistic helps identify the overall workload of a pitcher over a period of time.

Innings Pitched is a statistic that will invariably be dominated by starting pitchers. Relievers simply don't pitch enough innings to ever near the top of the list. Innings Pitched can be compared to other pitching statistics like strikeouts, earned runs, etc. to give an idea as to their efficiencies at the pitching position.
