A type of batted ball that his hit with power with a trajectory that is fairly level throughout its path. Line drives have a lower trajectory than fly balls and usually stay within the field of play but can, in some stadiums, reach over the outfield wall for a line drive home run.
Also referred to as a "Liner" or "Frozen Rope."
Line Drives can be very successful hits for batters due to the power and speed behind the ball, which often allows it to get past fielders so runners can easily make it on base with the potential of extra bases.
