Starting Pitcher

What is Starting Pitcher?

In baseball, the starting pitcher is the pitcher who takes the mound from the first inning in a game and throws the first pitch. Each team playing the game fields one starting pitcher.

Sporting Charts explains Starting Pitcher

Most major league baseball teams have four or five starting pitchers on their roster, known as the starting rotation. Each starting pitcher generally pitches the majority of a game and is later relieved by other pitchers from the bullpen. Starting pitchers train for endurance, and usually have the most diverse assortment of pitches at their disposal. In order for a starting pitcher to be eligible for a win, he must remain in the game for five full innings and hold the lead before he is replaced by a relief pitcher. When a pitcher stays in the game until its completion, he is credited with a "complete game."
