Flagrant Foul

What is Flagrant Foul?

A foul called as a result of contact that is deemed excessive, intentional and/or unnecessary. The team that draws a flagrant foul is awarded two free throws and possession.

Sporting Charts explains Flagrant Foul

There are two types of flagrant fouls in the NBA: Flagrant Foul 1, in which contact is considered unnecessary, and Flagrant Foul 2, in which contact is considered unnecessary and excessive. When a player commits a Flagrant Foul 1 twice, the player is ejected from the game. A Flagrant Foul 2 results in an automatic ejection. Players committing flagrant fouls typically receive monetary fines and/or suspensions.
