An offensive move in basketball, made by the ball carrier, in which the ball carrier fakes a shot without leaving the ground so as to get the defensive player to make a move that makes defending the ball carrier more difficult.
Pump fakes are a basic and fundamental startegy used by offensive players to give themselves an advantage. In the event that a defensive player falls for the pump fake and either jumps to defend the shot that isn't coming or is put off-balance, the shooter can then attempt an actual shot or move around the defender and get in the open.
