A term typically used to describe any type of artificial turf. The first use of artificial turf dates back to 1965. It is now widely used in stadiums because over the long run it reduces the cost of laying and maintaining real grass. AstroTurf is also a brand of artifical turf invented by Monsanto Industries.
Early artifical turf was similar to a thin carpet-like material, but more modern products have longer synthetic grass and incorporate rubber pellet infill and antimicrobial technology to help prevent injury.
