Any player who has possession of the football in his hands.

The ball carrier is different on almost every play. A running back is usually considered the primary ball carrier because he touches the ball more than anyone throughout the game. Other ball carriers include wide receivers, tight ends and quarterbacks who run the ball. On the flip side, a defensive back who intercepts a pass or recovers a fumble then becomes a ball carrier.
