What does Defensive Backfield Mean?
The defensive backfield consists of two cornerbacks and two safeties.

In a standard base defense, there are four defensive backs on the field. In certain obvious passing situations, the defense can choose to deploy a nickel or dime package that brings more defensive backs into the game in place of the majority of the linebacker corps.
