The role of a defensive end is to make sound decisions in the running game and not let a runner outside of his position, sometimes called "contain". He also needs to use his speed, strength and hands to provide a pass rush and get to the quarterback. Former Buffalo Bills' end Bruce Smith and the late Reggie White were two of the most complete and dominant defensive ends to ever play in the NFL.
