A defensive lineman who lines up in the interior of the defensive line.
A defensive tackle is vital to the success of the defensive unit. A tackle is usually a player who is physically imposing in strength and stature. In a 4-3 defensive, his primary role is to stop the run and provide pass rush up the middle. In the 3-4 scheme, he takes up space in the middle and takes on double teams in order to free up the linebackers to make a tackle. Great defensive tackles include Warran Sapp, Kevin Williams of the Minnesota Vikings, and Ndamukong Suh of the Detroit Lions.
