What does Direct Snap Mean?

An offensive play in which the quarterback is in the shotgun position, and the center snaps the ball directly to a running back or receiver instead of to the quarterback.

This is known as the "wildcat" formation in today's NFL, and many teams are using this formation, deploying quarterbacks as a decoy and the running back or receiver as the primary ball threat. Miami Dolphins were very successful with direct snaps using former running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. However, these types of plays result in modest success, generally speaking.
