Down Box
What does Down Box Mean?
The sideline officiating crew carries the down box, which is a pole with a box on top of it. The box contains the numbers 1 through 4, and it displays these numbers in coordination with which down is being played.

Nicknamed the "Chain Gang", this part of the officiating crew is stationed on the sidelines of each NFL game and tracks the down and distance of each play in an NFL drive.
