A succession of defensive or offensive plays in football, including any incurred penalties, beginning and ending with a change in possession.

Sporting Charts explains Series - football

An offensive series is essentially defined as an offensive drive, beginning with the first play after receiving a kickoff or a punt and ending either in a score, turnover or other change of possession. A defensive series occurs simultaneously; that is, a defensive series begins from the opposing team's first offensive play until the offense scores, turns over the football, or is forced to punt or relinquish possession on downs. Series are often statistically measured in a game based on their outcome-the success of an offense depends on how many of their series resulted in points, whereas the success of a defense is determined by how often they were able to force the offense from the field.
