Sporting Charts explains Side Zone

As stated, the side zones are the area between the hash marks and the sidelines and are part of the field of play. The side zones are typically occupied by wide receivers and defensive backs, as on most plays the line forms between the hash marks, although this is not always the case. If a play is blown dead in the side zone, the ball will be placed at the nearest hash mark, parallel to the spot of progress designated by an umpire.
