Total Offense

What does Total Offense Mean?

A statistic in football that corresponds to the total yards of rushing and total yards of passing for a team or an individual. This statistical measure is calculated by adding the total of rushing yards and total of passing yards.

Sporting Charts explains Total Offense

Credit is given to the player who carries the ball during a rushing play. When a passing play is used total passing yards are given to the player who throws the ball and receiving yards goes to the player who catches the ball. However when calculating total offense only the rushing yards and passing yards are used and not the receiving yards. In addition penalty yards do not count toward the total offense calculation. Total offense statistics calculation differs from the calculations used for yards of scrimmage. In calculating yards of scrimmage the person receiving the ball gets credit for the yards and not the person throwing the ball.
