True Freshman

What does True Freshman Mean?

A college football player who is in his first year out of high school and possesses both athletic and academic eligibility.  This differs from a red-shirt freshman who is an academic sophomore (2nd year of classes) but in his first season athletically.

It usually takes a special talent to become a true freshman in NCAA Division I football.  One of the best true freshman seasons in history was by Herschel Walker in 1980, he set the NCAA freshman rushing record, finished 3rd in Heisman voting, and became the first "true freshman" to become a 1st team All-American.
