A situation that occur in football when a team loses possession of the football due to a fumble or interception. The team that caused the turnover then takes over possession of the football.
Most experts view turnovers as a lack of discipline and/or coordination on the part of the player, the coaching staff or both. Turnovers are costly because they allow the other team an opportunity to take over and score either a field goal or a touchdown. The team with the most turnovers usually loses the game.
