What does Wild Card - football Mean?

A term in football refering to a winner who is a non-division winner that qualifies for the playoffs.

Sporting Charts explains Wild Card - football

In the playoffs division champions from each conference are seeded as 1 through 4. Two non division winners are seeded 5 and 6. When ranking the wild cards the better of the two teams will be seeded 5. During playoffs division winner that is seeded 3 will host the non division wild card winner that is seeded 5 and division winner that is seeded 4 will host non division wild card winner that is seeded 6.  After the first round of playoffs a wild card team may or may not still be in the second round. Division winner seeded 1 will play against the lowest  surviving seeded team from seeds 4, 5, 6 and number division winner seeded number 2 will play against 3, 4 or 5. After the second round the two winning teams from each conference's divisional playoffs will compete in conference championships and the winners will face off in the Super Bowl.
