Empty Net Goal
What does Empty Net Goal Mean?
A type of goal scored by a player after the opposition goaltender has left the ice leaving the goal unprotected.
Also, called "empty netters"
Sporting Charts explains Empty Net Goal
Usually, this occurs in the dying moments of the game when the opposition team is behind in the score and adds another forward on the ice in place of their goaltender in the hopes of having an offensive advantage to even the score.
Along with being a prolific goal scorer, Wayne Gretzky, scored his fair share of empty net goals during his career with 55 regular season empty net goals and 9 empty netters during the playoffs.
