A superstitious practice in hockey where a player doesn't shave their facial hair during their teams playoff run.


Sporting Charts explains Playoff Beard

The playoff beard, pioneered by the New York Islanders in the 1980's, is a phenomenon not exclusive to hockey. Teams and individual players in pro sports throughout North America and Europe are known to grow playoff beards with even fans joining in. Sometimes after a loss, the player will trim the beard in order to change the luck of the team.
