Super Bowl XLIX is set with the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks facing off against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. The Seahawks pulled off an impressive comeback against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game to book their third trip to the big game and their second consecutive.
With the Seattle Seahawks attempting to win their second straight Super Bowl this begs the question of how past defending Super Bowl Champions have fared when they've made it back the following year.
We did the digging and found out how defending Super Bowl Champions have done in Super Bowl games. Interesting, the last team win back-to-back Super Bowls was the 2004 New England Patriots who beat the Philadelpia Eagles 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX. Here is a list of each NFL team that had a chance to win back-to-back Super Bowls and how they fared:
|First Super Bowl Win||Team||Defending Super Bowl||Winner||Score||Loser||Defending Champ Win?|
|I||Green Bay Packers||II||Green Bay Packers||33–14||Oakland Raiders||Yes|
|VII||Miami Dolphins||VIII||Miami Dolphins||24–7||Minnesota Vikings||Yes|
|IX||Pittsburgh Steelers||X||Pittsburgh Steelers||21–17||Dallas Cowboys||Yes|
|XII||Dallas Cowboys||XIII||Pittsburgh Steelers||35–31||Dallas Cowboys||No|
|XIII||Pittsburgh Steelers||XIV||Pittsburgh Steelers||31–19||Los Angeles Rams||Yes|

In total, there have been 11 teams that have had the chance to win back-to-back Super Bowls. We found that the defending Super Bowl team won 8 of the 11 going 8-3 in these games, which suggests that there is something to getting back to the Super Bowl and having a sizeable advantage over opponents. Will the Seattle Seahawks make it 9 teams?
