Backdoor Breaking Ball

What is Backdoor Breaking Ball?

An off-speed breaking pitch designed to appear outside of the strike zone that crosses over the back corner of the plate just before it is caught.

Sporting Charts explains Backdoor Breaking Ball

The backdoor breaking ball is either a curveball or a slider that at first appears to be headed out of the strike zone, but moves laterally to catch a small portion of the plate on its way to the catcher. Because the pitch looks like it will be outside the strike zone, the hitter is expected to give up on it, only for it to pass over the back of the plate, coming in the “back door.” Breaking balls that his the back door are a favorite of pitchers as the final strike in a strikeout, freezing hitters who are “caught looking.”
