Brushback pitch

What is Brushback pitch?

A pitch thrown up and to the inside of the plate towards a batter’s head or shoulders.

Sporting Charts explains Brushback pitch

The brushback pitch is often thrown intentionally in an effort to discourage the current batter from crowding the plate with his body. It is also often used as a set-up pitch to back the hitter up in advance of a pitch outside the strike zone and away. Brushback pitches are understandably dangerous, and umpires do not hesitate to warn or eject pitchers from the game if they believe the pitch was intentional.
