Crowd the Plate

What is Crowd the Plate?

In baseball this term refers to a batting stance in which the batter moves or leans towards the inside of the batter's box, usually coming close to the plate or covering part of the strike zone.

Sporting Charts explains Crowd the Plate

The strategy behind crowding the plate is to attempt to hit a pitch outside of the strike zone, away from the batter's side of the plate. It also makes the batter more susceptible to being hit by a pitch, as a pitcher will often throw an inside or "brush-back" pitch to get the batter to back off and assume a normal stance. A pitcher will often be ejected by the home plate umpire if it is suspected that the pitch was thrown with the intent of hitting the batter.
