Double Play

What is Double Play?

This is a type of play in which two players on the offense are retired (or put out) within one continuous play by the fielding of the defense. This usually occurs when a ground ball is hit to one of the infielders, who then turns a force out and a tag out.

There are many different types of double plays, and these are recorded based on the fielders involved in the play and the order in which the play occurs. For example, a 6-4-3 double play occurs when the ball is hit to the shortstop (6), then thrown to the second baseman (4) to get the runner out, and then thrown to the first baseman (3) to get the batter out.
