A type of batted ball where the ball is hit high into the air. Players in the field attempt to catch the ball before it hits the ground to get the batter out automatically.
Also referred to as a "fly".
Fly balls that are caught in the field are referred to as "fly outs" or "air outs", which are recorded on the stat line of the batter as well as the pitcher. Fly balls that are unsuccessfully fielded can often lead to the batter reaching extra bases with the additional time given to him to run the bases.
