Game Score

What is Game Score?

A pitcher metric, created by Bill James, which attempts to evaluate individual game performance of a pitcher by taking into consideration outs, innings pitched, strikeouts, hits allowed, earned runs allowed, unearned runs allowed and walks.

Sporting Charts explains Game Score

Game Score is calculated as:

  • - The Pitcher start with a Game Score of 50 points.
  • - Add 1 point for each out recorded.
  • - Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.
  • - Add 1 point for each strikeout (K).
  • - Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.
  • - Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.
  • - Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.
  • - Subtract 1 point for each walk.

The highest score achieved in a nine inning pitching effort was by 20 year old Kerry Woods in 1998 after pitching 20 strikes, no walks and with only one hit - his Game Score was 105 (50 starting points + 27 points for outs + 10 points for innings 5-9 + 20 strikes - 2 for the single hit).
