Hit and Run

What is Hit and Run?

An offensive strategy in baseball where a team with a runner on first has the runner attempt to steal second once the pitch is thrown while the batter attempts to hit the ball through the area vacated by the defending second baseman who moves to second base to get ready to potentially receive the ball to get the stealing runner out.

Sporting Charts explains Hit and Run

This strategy allows for a greater chance for the hitter to get the ball through the infield as well as with the runner getting a head start a lesser chance of the double play. The risk involved is if the batter doesn't make contact with the ball, which would allow for the catcher to make a play on the runner stealing.
