Pitcher Quality Starts

What is Pitcher Quality Starts?

A pitching statistic in baseball that measures games in which the pitcher pitched for at least six innings without allowing more than three earned runs.

Sporting Charts explains Quality Starts

This is an imprecise measure, as a pitcher can be credited with a quality start by either throwing nine shutout innings or by pitching just six innings and allowing six runs (three earned). Nevertheless, over the course of the season the “cheap” quality starts and “hard earned” quality starts tend to even out and is a useful back-of-the-envelope metric to determine what pitchers kept their teams in the game the longest.
