Alley-oop

What is Alley-oop?

In basketball, this is an offensive play in which a player passes the ball near the basket (or sometimes off the backboard) and a teammate catches the ball in mid-air and shoots it-usually with a slam dunk-before he lands to the ground.

Sporting Charts explains Alley-oop

It's also possible to throw an alley-oop to oneself, but the degree of difficulty involved in pulling this off is considerably higher. A player can throw the ball off the backboard, catch it, and then shoot it in one attacking maneuver.

It is believed that the worst passes lead to the most impressive looking alley-oop plays because the shooter has to acrobatically adjust in mid-air to catch the inaccurately thrown pass.
