A violation in basketball during a free throw attempt that occurs when any player crosses a boundary into the foul lanes or the painted area of the key before the shot has left the shooter's hands.
During a free throw shot in the NBA, three defensive players and two offensive players line up in designated slots on either side of the foul lanes, while the free throw shooter is positioned behind the foul line at the top of the key. If at any point before the shot is released, any player crosses the line into the painted area, a lane violation occurs. If a member of the offensive team commits the violation, the result is a turnover to the defense. If, on the other hand, any member of the defensive team commits the violation, the shot is retaken if it was missed.
