A defensive strategy in which each defensive player covers a particular area of the court, as opposed to guarding a specific player on the other team.
Zone defenses are typically used when a team has a defensive matchup disadvantage with its opponents. Because all five players are accountable for an area as opposed to one particular player, zone defenses can hide weaker or slower defensive players. They can also neutralize a spectacular one-on-one player or a player who has a size advantage.
There are various types of zone defense in basketball. Some of the most common ones are the 2-3 zone, the 1-3-1 zone and the 1-2-2 zone.
