What is Fumble Rate?

A statistic used in football that measures the percent of rushing attempts that lead to a fumble. Fumble rate is mainly used to evaluate a running backs ability to maintain ball security when running the ball and prevent opponents from creating a turnover opportunity though a fumble.

Formula: Fumble Rate = fumbles / rushing attempts

For example, during the 2012 NFL season Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee had 5 rushing fumbles against 167 rushing attempts for a fumble rate of 2.99% while New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram had 0 rushing fumbles on 156 rushing attempts for a fumble rate of 0%.
