Hot Route

What is Hot Route?

A quick passing route in the football used by the quarterback to escape a sack or loss of yardage.

Sporting Charts explains Hot Route

When a quarterback senses that a blitz or defensive scheme will most likely disrupt the already called play or result in a sack, he audibles at the line of the scrimmage and signals a receiver. The quarterback then has the option to throw a “hot” or quick, short pass to a slot receiver or back in an attempt to get positive yardage out of the play. If the blitz does not come, the quarterback still has receivers on alternate route, with the hot route remaining an option, if necessary.
