What is Smashmouth Offense?

A style of offense in football that relies heavily on the running game to progress the ball forward where most of the plays are run as handoffs to the backs mainly the fullback and halfback. Smashmouth offense will most often form in the I Formation or Wishbone formation and will most often hand the ball off the the runner who will be aided by the blocking of the other back and tightends.

Smashmouth offense gets it name from the style of the plays ran in the offense where the backs and blockers push hard forward into the defensive line attempting to open up paths for the ball carrier or push the defensive line back enough to gain 3-4 yards. Passing plays are run in this style of offense when the opportunity presents itself but more often than not it will be a running play.
