Benched Hockey

What is Benched Hockey?

A term used in hockey to refer to a player who is eligible to play on the ice but has been prevented from playing by the decision of his coach and simply sits on the bench instead of being in the rotation of lines on the ice. Benching usually occurs when a player has being playing below expectations with the coach hoping that it will provide a lesson to the player.

Coaches have a few motivational tools to use during the game including timeouts, changing the goalie and benching players. Benching players while mainly intended to motivate or teach a lesson to an individual player can also be used to motivate the other players on the team.
