Checking Line

What is Checking Line?

A line of three forward players whose main role is to be good defensively and sometimes inflict punishment to the opposition through bodychecking or just plain hard work to wear down the other team.

Sporting Charts explains Checking Line

One of the most famous checking lines in history was known as the "Grind Line" with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1990s. It was made up of Kris Draper, Darren McCarty and Kirk Maltby.

Checking lines are usually comprised of players who fans can relate to. Often referred to as "Lunchbucket" or "Blue-Collar" players who play the game tough and work hard. Many of the centres on such a line are good at faceoffs and parts of the line are often used as penalty killers, helping them get extra ice time.
