A statistic in hockey that measures the goal differential of a player where each player on the ice receives a plus when their team scores a goal and each player on the ice receives a minus when their team is scored against. Plus-minus is only calculated at even-strength or when the other team scores short-handed.
Plus-minus is used as a marker of player effectiveness. While not stand alone, plus-minus can give a good indication of the effectiveness of the player especially defense oriented players. Additionally, when reviewing an individual players plus-minus it can help to look at their teams overall plus-minus to see where they sit relative to the team. Keep in mind that power play and short-handed goals are not used in calculating plus-minus and neither are penalty shots.
