A statistic in hockey that measures the rate at which a goalie generates saves compared to shots on goal. Save Percentage is one of the key statistics used in evaluating goaltenders ability at preventing goals against. The higher a goalies save percentage the better with a .900 being considered the minimum in the NHL with .915 being solid while above .930 being elite.
Formula: Save Percentage = saves / shots on goal
Save Percentage is mainly used to evaluate and compare the individual performances of goaltenders but is influenced by the quality of the defenders in front of him and the system of play imposed by the team. For example, if a team plays a heavily defensive game a goaltender will likely have a higher save percentage than he would if the sytem was more offensive focused.
