Sporting Charts explains Two-way forward

The two-way forward is critical to have in the playoffs where goals become harder and harder to come by. They often kill penalties and aren't necessarily on the top line, but still earn lots of playing time due to their defensive abilities.

Some of the most famous two-way players, also known sometimes as defensive forwards, include Mike Peca, Jere Lehtinen, Guy Carbonneau and Bob Gainey.  The National Hockey League - NHL awards the Frank J. Selke trophy to the best defensive forward in the game each season. This generally goes to the best two-way player who is responsible defensively, but can also score some points.
