Zone Starts

What is Zone Starts?

A statistic in hockey that measures the number of faceoffs a player starts in each zone of the ice, which is usually measured as a percentage and used as an indication of the players usage. The three zone types are offensive, defensive and neutral and help give an indication of whether or not the player is more often used in an offensive or defensive role as the coaches decide who to send out in different faceoff situations (not including faceoffs in the defensive zone due to icing).

Sporting Charts explains Zone Starts

Zone Starts along with time on ice splits help give an indication as to the type of player and how they are being used by the team. For example, a player with a high level of defensive zone starts and a high percentage of short handed time can be thought of as a player of defensive responsibility and qualities as they are put into situations where the team is under defensive pressure.
