More about Strikeouts Thrown Leaders
Although total offense is declined in recent years, pitching strikeouts thrown leaders have not put up numbers substantially different from that of 5, 10, or 15 years ago. It is true that total strikeouts by hitters are up, however total strikeouts thrown leaders has remained the same for a couple of reasons. One is that starting pitchers are throwing fewer total innings than in the past, meaning that they do not have as many total changes to rack up strikeouts. Another reason, which is related to the first, is that the strikeout rate is increasing more as of late for relievers than for starters, and relievers are not going to pitch enough innings to lead the league in any counting statistic such as this one.
