Team fielding percentage average is the percentage of defensive plays a defensive team makes that does not result in an error. For example, a team with a fielding percentage of .980 did not make an error in 98.0% of its chances.
More about Team Fielding Percentage
Similar to team errors per game, this is not a thorough metric to use when judging a team’s defensive capabilities. Fielding percentage does not take into account balls in play that a defensive is unable to get to because of a lack of range, but not necessarily due to poor fielding. Furthermore, given that some defensive players are expected to have a higher fielding average (for example, first basemen) than others (for example, shortstops) team fielding percentage can mask where a team’s defensive shortcomings exist.
