Team hit differential per game is the number of hits a team accumulated over the course of the season with the number of hits allowed by the pitching team subtracted, and then that difference is divided by the number of games that team played.

Since this takes into account both batting and pitching performances, teams at the top of the list in a given year are very likely to be playoff teams that year.  The average score in a given year is right around 0 (equal number of hits given up and obtained), and there are usually no more than a couple of teams each year that get one or more hits per game than they give up to their opponents.
