Player Rushing Yards Per Attempt Statistics: 2016 NFL Season

Players with the highest rushing yards per attempt are nearly always quarterbacks, who have the luxury (to an extent) of choosing when they want to run.  Generally speaking, quarterbacks choose to run the ball when they feel they can gain more than a few yards by leaving the pocket.  Running backs do not have the option of “backing out” of a running play when they can see it’s not going to result in a positive outcome. Among running backs, an average of five yards per attempt will usually come close to leading the league, while an average of 3.5 or lower may result in players looking for a new team the following season.
